Grandparents as Parents (GAP) exists to assist, provide education, advocate for, and develop grandparents/kinship guardians who are raising their grandchildren or children not directly their own by providing charitable & emotional support along with other necessary resources and advocacy for the immediate needs of these guardians and the children they care for.
In short, GAP exists to “fill the gap.” Grandparents face unique challenges as they revisit parenthood; they need resources and guidance that address the specific struggles they may face. If you are a kinship caregiver, a grandparent stepping in as a parent, or someone with guardianship of a non-biological child, you experience unique concerns and issues. We are here for you.
Since its founding, GAP has represented & supported Grandfamilies by:
- Partnering with three North Alabama nonprofits to help with food, clothing, school supplies, & Christmas presents
- Distributed over 140 tons of food (meats, dairy, breads, fresh veggies, canned goods, etc.)
- Provided 1,600 frozen meals to Grandfamilies, Kinship, Adoptive, & Foster families around North Alabama
- Distributed nearly 800 pairs of pajamas
- Provided school supplies for 2023-2024 school year for nearly 700 students
- Provided Christmas gifts for over 500 children
- Established partnerships with 2 area churches to store food and supplies in their counties to make it easier for Grandfamilies to pick up
- Serving nearly 56,000 Grandfamily members across Alabama
